The Department of Commerce (Aided) was established in 1951, offering the Intermediate Course during the founding year of the College. In 1952, the B.Com. programme was introduced, and it has since grown into two aided sections. The Department attained Postgraduate status in 1971 with the introduction of the M.Com. programme. In 1998, it was elevated to a Research Department, offering M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes in both full-time and part-time modes. Today, the PG & Research Department of Commerce (Aided) is strengthened by a team of 14 dedicated faculty members. Recognising the importance of expanding educational opportunities for women, the Management introduced an exclusive Women’s Section in B.Com. (Self-Financing) in the academic year 2000–2001. To meet the increasing demand for commerce education, an additional Self-Financing Men’s Section in B.Com. was launched in 2004–2005, followed by a PG programme for Men under the Self-Financing stream in 2009–2010. At present, the PG & Research Department of Commerce (Self-Financing – Men) offers 08 sections for B.Com, 01 section for B.Com (IF) and 01 section for B.Com (CA) at UG Programme and 02 for PG Programme , supported by a highly qualified team of 26 Male Faculty Members. Similarly, the Self-Financing Women’s Section is strengthened by 24 Women Faculty Members dedicated to delivering quality commerce Education. To cater to the aspirations of students seeking globally recognised professional qualifications, the Department launched the B.Com. (International Finance) programme from 2023–2024 onwards. This programme enables students to pursue the CMA (US) qualification alongside their B.Com. degree. The Department also serves as an accredited centre for CMA Foundation coaching, and offers value-added courses such as Tally Prime Accounting Packages to all students. Furthering its commitment to professional excellence, the Department introduced the B.Com. Computer Applications (CA) programme for Women students from 2024–2025 onwards, providing students an additional pathway to develop world-class competencies in Accounting and Finance. The Department is a well-established and recognised Research Centre in Commerce, supported by 09 approved Ph.D. Research advisers. Over the years, it has produced an impressive 127 Ph.D. Scholars and 460 M.Phil. Degree Holders. Currently, 35 Research Scholars are pursuing their Ph.D. programmes under the guidance of the Department’s approved research supervisors. The PG & Research Department of Commerce stands as one of the most distinguished and sought-after academic units of the College. The B.Com. programme continues to remain one of the most preferred courses among students, reflecting the Department’s strong academic reputation. Since its inception, the Department has consistently demonstrated excellence in Teaching, Research, and Placement outcomes. To enhance professional training, the PG & Research Department of Commerce has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) with The Institute of Cost Accountants of India, Tiruchirappalli Chapter, for conducting the CMA Foundation Course, and with Finspire Academy, Chennai, for offering the CMA (US) programme to our students. These collaborations strengthen the Department’s commitment to bridging academic learning with industry-oriented professional development. Our Commerce Department boasts a distinguished and globally accomplished Alumni network. Our graduates hold key positions not only in India but also in various governments and leading private organisations worldwide. They remain deeply connected to the College, and particularly to the Commerce Department, consistently supporting its growth and contributing to its legacy of excellence.
