Jamal Mohamed College (Autonomous) has entered into an understanding with West Asia Exports and Imports (P) Ltd, Chennai, a unit of ETA Ascon Group based in Dubai, for training and placement of students.
With subsidiaries in various sectors, including construction, cement manufacture, steel fabrication trade and shipping, retail and leisure, the group with an annual turnover of $3.2 billion has an employee strength of 58,000 across countries. It had recruited about 500 students from the college over the recent years and the signing of two memorandums of understanding on Wednesday formalised their association.
Hajee. M.J.M. Abdul Gafoor Sahib, Secretary and Correspondent, Jamal Mohamed College, and K. Jaffar Ali, the group's national head, human resource, exchanged the MoU documents - one for training and placement of MBA students and another for extending the same activities for students enrolled in other programmes in the presence of Bharathidasan University Vice-Chancellor M. Ponnavaikko.
Viewing the institute industry partnership as a model for other institutions, Dr. Ponnavaikko said the revamped syllabi that would be followed from the coming academic year would provide scope for colleges to offer skill-based programmes to students through tie-ups with industry. This would make them employable by the time they completed under-graduation.
He wanted colleges to relate the intellectual levels of students to industry needs and advised the students to imbibe team spirit and dynamism to foster growth.
In his corporate address, Mr. Jaffar Ali said knowledge was not a permanent asset in a fast-changing world. The advantages on knowledge driven businesses, the high proportion of youth population and the enterprising nature of the citizens favoured India's steady march towards the status of an economic superpower.
With the corporate sector on a virtual manhunt due to the gap in demand and supply, educational institutions needed to bridge the gap between academic inputs and talent. Industry-institute partnership, which would lead to training faculty and moulding students to job requirements, must reflect right from the level of framing the syllabi.
Principal M. Sheik Mohamed presided. Vice-Principal M.M. Shahul Hameed also addressed the gathering of MBA students.
